Safe Needle Disposal

Safe needle disposal is a public health and safety issue that is commonly overlooked. There are limited options for proper disposal of needles and sharps which leads to dangerous situations for the public and workers, causing exposure to a variety of potentially serious diseases including HIV, hepatitis and other blood-borne pathogens. To educate the public about safe disposal for all "at-home" users of sharps, NeedyMeds launched Safe Needle Disposal (www.safeneedledisposal.org), an information resource for community-sponsored sharps disposal programs and other options for sharps disposal.

The website, originally managed by the Coalition for Safe Community Needle Disposal, was redesigned, updated and expanded by NeedyMeds to offer general information on the proper handling and disposal of used needles, syringes and sharps, state health and solid waste department contacts, and pharmaceutical company take-back programs.
To find resources in your area, simply enter your Zip Code and distance out to find disposal locations near you along with their contact information, or search by state. If there are no locations by state or Zip Code search, optional FDA recommendations are provided for sharps disposal.
