Bipolar Disorder

The Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis Information Page is a collaborative project of NeedyMeds and the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. It is intended to provide information on Bipolar Disorder and to help those with Bipolar Disorder find assistance paying for their medications.

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. The mood episodes, often dramatic, can persist from days to weeks or longer. Such episodes are periods of highs and lows, called episodes of mania and depression, in which the person's mood can range from overly high and/or irritable to persistent sadness and hopelessness. Severe changes in behavior go along with the mood change and often people with bipolar disorder experience periods of normal mood in between mood episodes. It can be helpful to think of bipolar disorder as a spectrum of moods with a variety of treatment options.
