Cushing's Syndrome


The Cushing's Syndrome Diagnosis Information Page is a collaborative project of NeedyMeds and The MAGIC Foundation. It is intended to provide information on Cushing's Syndrome and to help those with Cushing's Syndrome find assistance paying for their medications.

Cushing's Syndrome is a hormonal disorder caused by high levels of the hormone cortisol. The most common cause of Cushing's Syndrome is excess steroid medications. Otherwise, Cushing's Syndrome is caused by growths (tumors) in the body. Commons symptoms may include a change in fat distribution with more fat in the upper body, purplish pink stretchmarks fragile skin and weakened bones. Women may have excessive hair growth while men may describe diminished sexual libido and performance. Cushing's Syndrome is diagnosed by a demonstration of elevated cortisol and once it is detected the next step is to find the cause. Treatment will depend on the cause.
